Mi Tjio - About

Artist Statement

My artwork is an investigation into social, cultural and racial structures. In my work I try to approach and examine norms, structures of inequality, semiotic language and how an individual might struggle to be surrounded by contemporary society. By reproducing familiar visual signs and positioning them in new contexts the work engages subjects such as racial stereotypes, white privilege and hybrid identity.

Often times these themes are combined into textile, video or photographic collages. Images or objects from popular- or modern culture are borrowed, taken out of their regular framework, deconstructed and rearranged in a new context. The technique and style of collage, or image manipulation, is an essential component establishing the new conditions in which the popular images are interpreted, and adding notions of humour, naivity and absurdity to disarm serious themes.

While I use a variety of materials and processes in each work my methodology is consistent. My work grows out of individual experience and concern for societal structures and they are linked by a recurring language of humour and collage technique. The connection between material and methodology is craftmanship. Different material is used and determined by both subject matter and craft skills. The exploring of the expressional language of craft is a component used to research and produce artworks that speak not only to the head but also to the hand. Each artwork uses visual culture, craft and collage to approach and discuss questions originating from personal experiences, making the subjects relevant to understanding and examining the modern world.
